Curlew

The current wet weather may be depressing for us but for the curlew this is good news - providing it does not last too long!  Dry moorland is not good for a bird that relies on worms and insects as its long probing beak struggles with the hard ground. The curlews on Big Moor appear to nest among the heather but feed mainly in the fields and pastures which surround these moors.  A few days ago I was near Leash Fen when the peace was disturbed by these 2  curlews squabbling.   Here is a short video courtesy of 'betacygni' on youtube which expresses better than I can the haunting sounds of this bird. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws7jH6wNKN4&feature=colike
