Trespassing in the early 20th Century

Bert Ward had many encounters with land agents and gamekeepers on Big Moor, as most of the land we walk on freely today was in private ownership at that time.  On numerous occasions he recounts confrontations with gamekeepers but also mentions having a pint in the pub with them later.

The Clarion Ramblers Handbook reproduced this article on the subject by F.E.Wynne, a walker himself but also the Chief Medical Officer of the time!  I cannot believe that these days a civil servant would be able to get away with expressing views so forcefully!
